AI-generated UI looks generic because AI models design by averaging. Ask Claude Code, Cursor, Lovable, Bolt or v0 for a landing page without a reference, and you get the most common landing page they have seen: a centred hero, a purple gradient, three rounded feature cards and vague copy. Designers call the result AI slop. This guide explains why it happens and seven fixes that work in every AI coding tool.
Quick answer: give the AI a real design to copy, lock your colours and type into tokens, write real content, limit yourself to one accent colour, set a spacing scale, check every page on a phone, and change one thing at a time.
Why AI designs all look the same
Anthropic calls it distributional convergence. A model predicts the most likely next token, and the most likely design is the middle of everything it was trained on. Without specific direction, every tool drifts to the same safe defaults. The more vague the prompt, modern, clean, beautiful, the stronger the pull to the average.
1. Give it a real design to copy
The biggest single fix. A finished design template tells the AI the exact fonts, sizes, spacing and colours to use, so it copies instead of averaging. Save the template in your project or paste it into the first prompt, then ask the tool to match it exactly. Pick one built for your tool: Claude Code templates, Cursor templates, Lovable templates, Bolt templates or v0 templates.
2. Lock colours and type into tokens
Ask the AI to put every colour, font and size into a theme file first, and to use only those values. Random hex codes in every component are why AI designs drift from page to page. Save the rule in your rules file so it applies to every request.
3. Write real content
Placeholder text makes any layout look like a template. Give the AI your real product name, audience, features and numbers, and ask for copy that sounds like your product. Specific words force specific design decisions.

Get a licence4. One accent colour
Generic designs use gradients and colour everywhere. Professional ones use one accent colour for actions and links, and neutrals for everything else. It instantly creates visual hierarchy: people see what to click.
5. A spacing scale and generous white space
Cramped sections are the clearest sign of an AI-built page. Set a spacing scale, such as 4, 8, 16, 24, 32, 48 and 64 pixels, and ask for generous padding between sections. White space is what makes a page feel premium.
6. Check every page on a phone
AI tools preview at desktop width. Open each page at 375 pixels wide and fix overflow, small text and tiny tap targets. A design that breaks on phones looks amateur to most visitors.
7. Change one thing at a time
After the first version, ask for one change per message. Big rewrites let the AI fall back to its defaults; small, specific changes keep your design intact.
Tool-specific fixes
In Claude Code, put your design rules in a skill: see the best Claude Code skills for frontend design. In Cursor, save them as a project rule with the Cursor rules generator. In Lovable, follow how to make a Lovable app look professional. For design inspiration by section, browse navbar design, features section design and CTA section design ideas.
Frequently asked questions
Why does AI-generated UI look generic?
AI models predict the most likely design, which is the average of their training data. Without a specific design to follow, every tool drifts to the same defaults.
What is AI slop in design?
A name for generic AI-made interfaces: purple gradients, centred heroes, identical rounded cards and vague copy that look the same across thousands of apps.
How do I make Claude Code design better?
Give it a design template to follow, put design rules in CLAUDE.md or a skill, and ask it to check pages at phone and desktop width.
Does a better prompt fix generic design?
Only partly. Words like modern or clean change little. A concrete design reference and fixed tokens change the result far more.
Which AI tool makes the best designs?
The tool matters less than the reference. Claude Code, Cursor, Lovable, Bolt and v0 all produce professional results when they copy a real design.
How many colours should a website use?
One accent colour for actions, plus neutrals for text, backgrounds and borders. More colours usually make a design look less professional.
